Jerry Haigh was delighted to discover this week his new memoir, The Trouble with Lions: A Glasgow Vet in Africa, made the shortlist of the Saskatchewan Book Awards in two categories.
Jerry has been busy touring, speaking to media and storytelling across Canada, but happened to be home with his wife Jo in Saskatoon when the news came. His book has been shortlisted in two separate categories of the Saskatchewan Book Awards: in the Non-fiction Category with Sharon Butala, Donna Caruso, David McLennan, Candace Savage, and Bill Waiser; and in the Saskatoon Category with Rita Bouvier, Pam Bustin, Louise Halfe, Arthur Slade, and Bill Waiser.
The winners of the 2008 Saskatchewan Book Awards will be announced at the gala on Saturday, November 29, at the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina.
The Trouble with Lions is a trove of real-life tales by wildlife veterinarian and storyteller, Jerry Haigh. It covers his years as a big game vet in various locales in Africa, treating lions, elephants, rhinos, kob, and other large mammals, and contains some astonishing insights into the bushmeat trade. The foreword is by none other than Jane Goodall. This is Jerry’s second Africa memoir, after Wrestling with Rhinos.
The SBA announced Wednesday that this was a record-breaking year for nominations and that the shortlist had been pared down from 113 titles totalling 261 entries to 54 titles and 80 nominations in 14 categories. The full SBA news release and shortlist are available at their website.
We’ll be watching with fingers crossed. Bon chance, Jerry!
